What is GST Modification?

Any change or alteration made in the GST Registration or the details entered in the GST certificate is referred to as GST modification. One may opt for Amendment in GST Registration if he wishes from composite to normal scheme, or if there are mistakes in GST registration. To get GST modification, you need to file form GST REG 14.Since the beginning of GST regime in 2017, the taxpayers could register under 2 schemes- normal scheme and composite scheme. One could also shift from normal to composite scheme. However, the government had declared 31st March 2018 as the deadline to get GST Registration under composite scheme by filing Form GST CMP-02. Now, one can't shift from normal to the composite scheme but can go vice-versa with a GST modification.

Different Types of Amendments that can be done
  • Change In Core Field: The changes in Core field includes the legal name of the business, the address of the principal place of business, and any additional place of business. It takes 15 days to get approval from a proper office to amend the Core Fields.
  • Change In Non-core Field: There are some fields that don’t require any approval from a proper office and amendments in Non-core fields can be easily done online. All the fields except those, which are covered under core fields come under a Non-core field. Non-core fields are available for editing, and changes in it are auto-populated in the registration of the taxpayer. No approval is required from the Tax Official if any amendments are made to these fields by the taxpayers.
  • Change In Email Or Mobile Number: The change in email or mobile number requires verification by OTP(One-Time Password) after online verification on the common GST portal.
GST Modification and Amendment of GST Registration

After receipt of GST Registration Certificate, the need for amendments in registration may arise due to several factors such as a change in address, change in contact number, change in business details and so on. In order to amend any information post registration, the taxpayer needs to file an Application for Amendment of Registration.

GST Modification is divided into two parts: Core Fields and Non-Core Fields. Core Field changes require supporting documents to be attached while applying. Non-Core Fields can be updated without submitting any proofs. To get GST modification, you need to file form GST REG 14.
